Why this book

A history most Persian readers have never been allowed to read

Daniel Gordis tells the story of Israel from the origins of the Jewish people through to the present — the arguments, the failures, and the compromises included. It won the National Jewish Book Award, and it is the book people are usually pointed to when they want one volume rather than a shelf.

For Persian readers this is the first time the whole of it has been available. Accounts of this history that reach Iran have been through a censor, or were written to reach a conclusion that was decided in advance. This translation is complete: nothing removed, nothing softened, no footnote quietly dropped because of what it says.

Yasser Qorashi — a physician, writer and human rights activist — spent two years on the translation. The point was not to replace one official version with another, but to let Persian readers read the sources and argue with them for themselves.

About the author

Daniel Gordis is Koret Distinguished Fellow at Shalem College in Jerusalem and the author of more than a dozen books on Jewish history and Israeli society. His work is read on both sides of most arguments about Israel, which is unusual, and is the reason this book was chosen.

The Rahee Foundation

Fighting censorship, one translation at a time

Rahee is a non-profit organization in Toronto. We translate and publish books that Persian readers cannot get at home, and we sell them here at cost plus what it takes to fund the next one.

There is no investor behind this and no advertising budget. Buying a copy is what pays for the next translation.

About the foundation

For many Persian speakers, a serious and impartial account of this history has simply not been available. From the translator's note
